Our never-ending natural deodorant experiment continues…
Between Sam and I, we’ve spent nearly $300 on all sorts of different natural deodorants. Because let’s face it, the natural deo struggle is REAL. (And of course, we’ll do anything for the sake of the blog!)
If you’re looking to finally make the switch to aluminum-free deodorant, HOORAY! We’re so happy you’re here. Even though it can be a tough transition, it’ll be very much worth it in the end.
To help get you started, we compiled a rundown of the best and worst natural deodorants we’ve tested so far. Keep reading to find out which brands leave you feeling fresh all day…and which leave you icky and in need of shower.
Schmidt’s
- Price: $8.99
- Shop: Amazon
This was one of the very first natural deodorant brands Sam and I ever experimented with! Even though it’s one of the more popular brands out there, we ended up finding after a few months, we were both experiencing the same annoying cons. Irritated skin, stinky armpits and stained clothes.
Schmidt’s Pros and Cons
- Smells yummy
- Very affordable
- Super clean ingredients
- Irritated skin
- Must reapply multiple times per day
- Stains clothes
Worth it? Not worth it.
Native
- Price: $12
- Shop: Native website
This is another super popular brand and the FIRST we ever tried! Being that we were total newbies to the natural deodorant game, we really had no idea what we in for when we tested out Native. We found ourselves constantly re-applying and both ended up getting rashes as well. SIGH.
Native Pros and Cons
- Comes in 10 different scents
- No white residue
- Irritated skin in the beginning
- Must reapply multiple times per day
- Stains clothes
Worth it? Not worth it.
Primally Pure (Charcoal)
- Price: $16
- Shop: Primally Pure
Even though I’m currently not using this deodorant, I did absolutely love it while I experimented with it. The minty fresh smell, the creamy texture and the overall results were a million times better than any of the other natural deodorants I tested prior to this one.
Primally Pure Pros and Cons
- Charcoal is very effective at controlling odor and removing toxins
- Smell is very fresh and neutral
- Long-lasting
- Stains clothes/leaves white residue
- Can only buy it on Primally Pure website
- Little pricey
Worth it? Worth it.
Primal Pit Paste
- Price: $10.95
- Shop: Find your local retailer here.
This deodorant originally caught Sam’s attention because it came in both a jar and stick form. She found that the jar version of it was way more effective than Schmidt’s. Unfortunately, there were quite a bit of cons she just couldn’t get past. One of them being the messy application!
Primal Pit Paste Pros and Cons
- The jar consistency is nice and fluffy
- The stick is great for on-the-go
- Ingredients are super clean
- Messy application
- Not long-lasting
- Stains clothes
Worth it? Not worth it.
Kai
- Price: $24
- Shop: Amazon or Anthropologie
Sam and I discovered this deodorant on one of our many Anthropologie shopping sprees. After testing it out for about a month, I realized it just wasn’t a good option for me. The stank was real, friends. But Sam, on the other hand, liked this one! Is it better than her all-time-favorite Kopari, though? Not really.
Kai Pros and Cons
- Glides on easily
- Doesn’t stain clothes
- Has a clean, earthy scent to it
- Expensive!
- Not long lasting (at least for me)
- Sticky residue
Worth it? Not worth it.
Type A
- Price: $10
- Shop: Type A
This deodorant is sweat activated, so it’s a great option for those who like to get a good workout in. I loved the creamy texture. My only issue with it was the scent – I tried the “Visionary” (citrus scent), and I just smelled really funky at the end of the day. The unscented version was better but still made me smell weird.
Type A Pros and Cons
- Great for working out
- Comes in three different scents
- Doesn’t irritate the skin
- Tube application is odd
- Must wait until cream dries before getting dressed
- Scent is strange towards end of day
Worth it? Not worth it.
Kopari
- Price: $14
- Shop: Sephora
You guys know we’re big fans of Kopari over here! We did a whole group experiment around it, and most people fell in love with this coconut deodorant. While I totally loved the texture and scent, it just didn’t get me through the day. Sam, on the other hand, literally can’t live without it! She’s used this for years now. It works perfectly for her and is her #1 go-to when it comes to natural deodorants.
Kopari Pros and Cons
- Delicious tropical scent
- Glides on super easily
- Doesn’t irritate the skin
- Doesn’t stain clothes
- Might not be long lasting for some
- Contains “fragrance”
- Some say it causes allergic reaction
Worth it? Worth it.
Crunchy Mama Bear
- Price: $10
- Shop: Etsy
This brand is in my top 5! Crunchy Mama Bear was founded by Rebecca Nowak, a beautiful mom and breast cancer thriver who wanted to create a line of natural products that were safe for her and her family to use. We gave her armpit detox mask (HIGHLY RECOMMEND!) and her natural deodorants a try and saw great results. While this one didn’t work as well for Sam, it did work wonders for me. Again, this is more of a creamy deodorant, which seems to work much better for me.
Crunchy Mama Bear Pros and Cons
- Comes in three refreshing scents
- Super minimal ingredients
- Doesn’t stain clothes
- Might not be long lasting for some
- Application requires massaging the product into your armpits
Worth it? Worth it.
Lumē
- Price: $13.99
- Shop: Lume
I experimented with Lume the summer of 2019, and have to say, it held up pretty well in the hot, humid weather. The texture is somewhere between a cream and gel, and it comes in various yummy smells. The best for me was actually the unscented version! You do have to massage the product into your armpits for it to full absorb, but I feel like this helps the deodorant work better.
Lume Pros and Cons
- Long-lasting odor control
- Non-irritating
- Doesn’t stain clothes
- Little product goes a long way
- Application requires massaging the product into armpits
- Body gets used to scent quickly so you have to switch it up
Worth it? Worth it.
Agent Nateur Holi(Stick) No. 3
- Price: $21
- Shop: Nordstrom
This deodorant is definitely in my top 2! I tested Agent Nateur through the second half of 2020, and I must say, it help up VERY well. It’s creamy, smells like a light mix of lavender and honey, and lasts all day long. At the end of the night, I don’t smell like anything! Seriously the best feeling.
Agent Nateur Pros and Cons
- Long-lasting odor control
- Non-irritating
- Doesn’t stain clothes
- Expensive and hard to find
- Consistency is pretty thick
Worth it? Worth it.
Each & Every
- Price: $15
- Shop: Each & Every (link includes a $5 off coupon!)
I think I hit the jackpot with this one! This is by far the best natural deodorant I’ve tried so far. It comes in many delicious scents, the consistency is a very light cream, and you will literally smell like heaven all day long. I dare you to sniff your armpits at the end of the day! You’ll smell just like you did in the morning. My favorite scents are Coconut Lime and Cedar Vanilla but I recommend you get the 4 minis to try a variety of scents for $20.
Each & Every Pros and Cons
- Long-lasting odor control
- Variety of great scents
- Doesn’t stain clothes
- I got one armpit pimple from it in the very beginning but none since then!
Worth it? Worth it.
