Clean, healthy pits with Native? Is it possible?
My never-ending battle between “regular” and “natural” deodorants needed to come to an end. I was desperate to make the switch to an aluminum-free brand after years of experiencing terrible rashes and breakouts with Dove and Degree deodorants (both stick and dry spray versions).
But after giving Tom’s of Maine, Soapwalla and Nubian Heritage deodorants a try…I was not convinced that the au naturel path was the one for me. (A.k.a. I was stanky!)
I had come across multiple Native ads on various social media platforms and was always curious to try. So I finally read up on it, saw they had rave reviews, ran to Sam with excitement, got the seal of approval (it was on her must-try list too! #twinsies) and decided to give it a go. I got the Coconut & Vanilla scent and Sam got the Lavender & Rose.
And off we went to the land of brand certification! Sweaty pits and all…(TMI?)

Claudia’s Native Experiment
I took a risk and actually purchased Native right before a trip to Dallas and Miami (call me crazy, I know). I brought my backup Dove deodorant with me, just in case, but was determined to give Native a shot. Heat, humidity and all.
The instructions that came in the packaging suggested you use Native solely on freshly cleaned skin and to rub in any excess deodorant into your underarms to further activate the oils in the paste. Of course, being the type-A that I am, I followed the instructions to a T. I really, really wanted to love this product.
During the first two weeks, I noticed my body was giving off more odor than usual (toxins be-gone!). I reapplied a couple of times a day and cleaned my underarms with soap before every use. It was a bit of a process!
I also did notice some small bumps, but figured again this was just my body detoxifying.
Luckily, the process dwindled down to just a simple 4-stroke application in the morning before my workout and post-shower and the rash is now completely gone.
Yay for healthy pits!
Sam’s Native Experiment
Since I’ve always wanted to get on the natural deodorant bandwagon, I desperately wanted Native to work.
I was bummed after a week or so in when I started feeling sweatier in the middle of the day, something I definitely was not used to. I started finding myself re-applying throughout the day. The insert in the box advises to use soap and water before applying and to stick to it for a couple weeks for it really to work.
Confession: I didn’t follow the directions exactly…so I thought that probably lead to my sweatiness in the middle of the day.
I was so determined to make it work, I started following the directions, didn’t mix with my old Dove deodorant, and I started to see improvements, but not fully.
Depending on the weather and the day, I still find myself reapplying throughout the day.
I’m still determined, but, ugh, how long should this really take?! At the end of the day, I’d rather reapply throughout the day and use a natural deodorant than use something that’s full of icky ingredients. So for now, I’ll be sticking to Native.
But I have a feeling we’ll both be switching to different deodorants soon!
