I woke up like this.
Okay, okay. Maybe I didn’t exactly wake up looking like I do in the pic below. But is there really anything better than waking up in the morning feeling rested and refreshed? And looking in the mirror and thinking, “Wow my skin is glowing!” That’s what we like to call: beauty sleep.
It’s not about how many products you can lather on your face, or even how many hours of sleep you get. It’s about the mindful steps you make to ensure you get a truly restful night of sleep.
So with that in mind, I decided to put together my go-to beauty sleep routine for you guys because it’s something that I’ve played around with for many years and finally feel like I’ve got it down pat. When I follow the steps below (which is pretty much every night!), I wake up feeling soooo good.
And you want to know something funny? Both Sam and I do pretty much the same things to get ready for a night of restful sleep! Besides the fact that we’re somehow soul twins, we both completely agree this is pretty much the perfect beauty sleep routine.
Step 1: Drink Peppermint Tea
Mmmm peppermint tea. There’s nothing like a warm cup of tea after dinner, am I right?? And while most people like to drink “sleepy” teas before bed, Sam and I have found that drinking peppermint tea after dinner is the best first step to getting a good night’s sleep.
Why you ask? Well friends, peppermint tea is AMAZING for the digestive system, and making sure your digestive system is calm before bed is key to getting a good night’s sleep.
Peppermint tea has a soothing effect on the gastrointestinal tract and is thought to reduce any annoying bloating and pains you might feel in your tummy after dinner (which is sometimes unavoidable no matter how healthy you eat!)
So first things first, go brew yourself a hot cup of minty tea!
Step 2: Turn on “Do Not Disturb”
About an hour or so before going to bed, I like to turn on the “Do Not Disturb” function on my phone. It basically silences all calls and notifications while my phone is locked.
I just recently started doing this because I noticed that I would constantly reach for my phone every time it lit up with a notification and sometimes would find myself scrolling aimlessly through Instagram or Facebook as a result. My eyes would feel super tired but my brain would be in overload. Next thing I knew, I was waking up with sore eyes and a tired mind.
So I decided to turn my phone on Do Not Disturb and leave it elsewhere in the apartment so I wouldn’t be distracted by it and waste time looking at my screen. This little change has made ALL the difference in the quality of my sleep!
Try it. I promise you won’t regret it! (All those notifications will be there waiting for you in the morning…no need to act on them right away.)
Step 3: Set an Easy Nighttime Skincare Routine
Having an easy nighttime skincare routine will ensure that you actually go through with it! There’s no need to spend more than 5-10 minutes on bedtime beauty. Because really, you just want to get to BED!
Here’s what our routine looks like:
- Remove makeup with coconut oil and micellar water
- Take a nice hot shower – Sam and I both HAVE to shower before getting in bed…gotta wash off the nitty gritty nastiness of the day! Plus, a soothing hot shower helps us relax before bed.
- Wash face with either a cream-based cleanser or a scrub
- Apply our favorite serum (either vitamin C or this cult-fav serum we’re experimenting with now!)
- Moisturize our faces, bodies and lips
These steps ensure we wake up with our skin glowing and ready for the day!
Step 4: Wind Your Mind Down + Set a Bedtime
The next step in our perfect beauty sleep routine is to do something that helps our minds unwind before bed. Typically, we like to watch a little TV and catch up on our favorite shows. But you can also read, listen to relaxing music or meditate. Anything that will take your mind off of whatever happened that day is great!
I’ve found that if I go to sleep right after I shower, it takes me a long time to fall asleep because my body is a little too warm and mind is still running (I do my best thinking in the shower lol). So I like to chill on the couch and watch ONE episode of my favorite show. Just one! After that, I’m off to bed.
Having a set bedtime during the week also ensures that I get enough sleep. So I’m off to bed every night at around 10-10:30pm and wake up at 6am. For me, that’s the perfect amount of sleep! But everyone is different, so be sure to figure out what works best for your body.
Step 5: Diffuse Essential Oils
And finally…diffuse some oils! Guys, essential oils are everything. Especially when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep. We absolutely loooove diffusing lavender and peppermint essential oils in our bedrooms. They make the room smell delish and help to quiet our minds for peaceful sleep.
The combination of peppermint and lavender oil is perfect for stress and anxiety relief. And to be honest, I do notice a BIG difference when I diffuse these oils versus when I don’t. I’ll either feel super rested in the morning or dying for more sleep because my mind was running all night.
We HIGHLY recommend getting a diffuser and filling your room with the yummy smells of lavender and peppermint before bed.
